    Noob's guide

  • Sunday, 6 October 2013

  • Noob's guide

One noob's guide to successfully migrating from iOS to Android, and the best apps to make it all work. I’ve recently made a very difficult life decision. I’ve decided it’s time to try a phone other than my trusty iPhone.
Since the iphone 3 I’ve been firmly in the Apple camp for my smartphone. Yes, I’m aware it’s a terrible walled-garden, and yes, I know that Steve Jobs was a notorious puppy-killer and megalomaniac – or something, if you pay attention to the constant inter-camp bickering. But, in my defense, I would just like to say what everyone usually says in defense of Apple products.
They just work. I do enough tweaking and fiddling with the various PCs in my life that something that just does what it says in the tin is pretty attractive. Plus I’m a long term user of iTunes, and while I know people who really do think it is the devil, I’ve never had issues, and really like the easy integration of music across my devices.
That said, a couple of things have influenced my decision to move. My current iPhone is a 4s, and it’s a little on the heavy side; I wear suits quite a bit, and it’s not unusual for my phone to ruin the line of a well-cut suit, both in terms of bulk, and in the way it drags down one side. When I’m wearing jeans, though, the phone lives in my back pocket, where its hard edges have worn two inconvenient holes in the back pocket of every pair I own. And then there’s just plain curiosity – I probably should have a go at the other side of things, given my line of work.
So, being a firm believer that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing in an extreme way, I’ve gotten hold of a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S4, and I’m making the leap. I’m not the only person to switch sides, or contemplate it, so I thought I’d document the process and list what apps and tools have made the transition as easy as possible. Hopefully... it’s light!
As I said, one of the big draws of the Galaxy S4 is its weight, and it’s a pretty amazing piece of kit in that regard. The plastic is a big change from the glass-backing of my iPhone 4s, but the new handset does come with some drawbacks.First up, it’s so large that it doesn’t fit in my jeans pocket properly, and while my iPhone never fell out of my pocket, the S4 has dropped to the floor twice in a single week while I’m sitting down. Thankfully, the plastic seems plenty tough – there’s not a scratch on the unit. And yes, it does buckle a far better swash in a suit, despite being larger. So that’s one win for the new phone right away. Of course, the sartorial scale is just one measure of a good phone, and for the majority of users, not even the most important (you philistines!). As weird as it may sound, the prime use for a phone is still communication, so the first step of the conversion process was to get all my contacts across to the S4. Thankfully, there’s Samsung Smart Switch, which worked pretty seamlessly, though not perfectly.
You can download the software here, and once you’ve got your iPhone backed up to your PC (not a cloud backup, but one on your actual hard drive), you’re in luck. And no, there isn’t a version for Mac as of writing, but one is apparently coming. Once the application’s installed, run it and it will ask you to plug in your Samsung device. Once it’s connected, you can select what device’s backup you’re using, and which particular backup to use. In our case, it was a little trickier; my iTunes files are stored on the home NAS, and Smart Switch didn’t seem to like navigating beyond my desktop. I had to copy the backup from the server to my PC, but then it worked fine.
With the backup chosen, you get a simple menu where you can pick what you want to backup, including not just contacts, but images, videos, music and more. Of course, it’s also worth remember that, out of the box, the S4 has only 8GB of storage – I skipped porting my music across, because even on my 16GB iPhone I was pushing things to its limit. But that’s okay. With the ability to expand storage via a MicroSD card, I was looking forward to going nuts and getting my entire collection across. You can never tell when you’ll want to play the most obscure track in your collection, right?
One last thing – Smart Switch will offer to download Samsung’s Kies handset management app, but it’s really not at all essential. In fact, it's pretty dire.
Contacts and Google interactions are... odd
One of the oddest things about signing into Gmail on the new phone is the way your contacts are suddenly full of Google+ and Gmail contacts – the G+ stuff is especially annoying, as I used G+ for approximately 47 hours before finding it inherently pointless (which is harsh, but I really do only have time/spoons for a handful of social media avenues). Thankfully you can turn off G+ contact-syncing, though it is about three screens down in the Accounts part of the phone’s settings.
So, with all that cleaned out of contacts, I was able to see that pretty much everything had worked fine with Smart Switch – which was sadly wrong. As some SMSes started coming in, it looked as though while some contacts had came across, the numbers associated with them didn’t. Not too many, but if you’re going through the process it’s worth doing a quick double check for missing details, and then manually copying across whatever’s needed. In my case, it was only three phone numbers out of 46 people. One thing that has really opened my eyes to Android (even Samsung’s rather bloated version of it) is the sheer amount of customisation power on offer, in terms of the look and functionality of the various home screens. So, having gotten a taste of that in nixing G+’s control of my phone, I went digging a little further. There are a tonne of voice and motion control options in the S4, and to put it mildly, some work better than others. At the best of times I’ve always found voice control to be quite the gimmick, so killing off all of that not only means there’s that much less processing on the CPU, but you can also then speed up the response of the home button. By turning off the ‘Open via the home key’ option for the S Voice shortcut, you actually get faster performance when you actually want to go to the home screen – so, pretty much all of the time.
The gesture input tricks are kinda neat, but, again, hardly world-changing. Half the time we find the phone can’t even pick them up, so turning them off entirely is, again, a bit of a battery saver. And anyway, answering your phone by passing your hand over seems like a great way to accidentally answer the phone a lot.
(Or perhaps I’m just anti-social like that)
Quick Glance is useful, though, and generally works pretty well. I’ve kept that enabled, so that I can simply pass my hand over the phone to get a rundown of missed calls, messages, and check the time. The S4 comes with a host of security options, and I couldn’t resist giving the facial recognition a try. Sadly, it too falls into the cute-gimmick category. The contortions required to get your face at the right angle to the phone, with the right lighting, renders the function torturous at best. Either stick with a simple passcode, or use the pattern method. Finally, one of the most useful things for anyone who worries about exceeding their data cap – so, most people, really – is the ability to not only easily monitor daily usage, but also set a mobile data limit, via Settings | Connections | Data Usage. I’d consider this one essential for anyone who uses their device for media consumption, and even more so if you’re a frequent traveller.
I’ve got the music in me (and my phone)
I’m really blown away by the ability to expand my phone’s storage capacity, and the MicroSD cards are pretty cheap – a 32GB card will set you back less than $50. My music collection currently runs to over that, but jests aside, there are some albums I know I won’t have the sudden urge to listen to on the road.
I’m sorry, Enya, but teenage me was really only into you because you had a track called Lothlorien. Of course, Android devices obviously don’t play nicely with iTunes, but there is in fact an app for that, to borrow a phrase. iSyncr has both a free and more fully-featured version for $3.99, and it’s generally considered one of the best Android/iTunes syncing apps out there. It’s a two-application solution, requiring the free/paid version on your phone, and then another free version on the PC you want to get your files off. Then it’s just a matter of syncing tracks from device to device. There’s a tonne of other, more or less personal tweaks that I’ve made, like turning off annoying typing sounds, and re-arranging the home screens, but otherwise, my new phone is now up and running as I want it to.

Now to find jeans with a slightly bigger back-pocket...

  • 10 Mysterious Underwater Anomalies

The earth is covered with water to a greater degree and water has the greatest mysteries enclosed in it. I am giving a subjective list of the 10 mysterious underwater anomalies which will be accepted to a greater degree by the one who reads it.

    1. Gulf of Khambhat Discovery
In May 2001, in the Gulf of Khambhat an ancient city was discovered. It was discovered during the pollution studies. This ancient city dated back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Many artifacts like stones, wood, pottery, a tooth and fossil bones were discovered. The site was composed of a drainage system, granary, bath, a citadel and spaced dwellings. The controversies given on this were that these artifacts may be buried under or were natural. This is the most mysterious Underwater Anomaly.

    2. Bimini Structures
A number of rectangular structures were discovered in the waters of the west of Bimini. They were discovered in 2006 and 2007. These rectangular structures were 30m deep from the surface of water and they resembled the structures found on the coast of Cuba. These structures are in parallel, straight lines with 50 stone piles from which 10 are 45 feet in size. Their age is approximately 10,000 BC.

    3. Japan’s Yonaguni Monument
Japan’s Yonaguni Monument was discovered in 1987 in the coast of Japan. It has many controversies till now. Some claim that this whole site is a natural with its carvings being the natural scratches. Others claim it to be a natural structure but with the modification of the human hands. This structure is approximately the age of 10,000 BC having its modification from the last ice age.

    4. Cuba’s Underwater City
In 2001, some submerged geometrical and symmetrical structures were found while doing a survey work in the Cuban coast. These structures are at the depth of between 2,000 and 2,460 feet approximately. They cover an area of almost 2 square km. It is believed that these structures are man made but they belong to the Yucatecos and Maya stories which were buried in the sea years back.

    5. Lake Michigan’s Stonehenge
In 2007, in a survey a series of stones were discovered in the bottom of the Lake Michigan. These resembled with the Stonehenge in the UK. This stone monument is in a circle which is approximately 40 feet below the surface. There is also a carving of an animal Mastodon which has been extinct before 10,000 years. This monument creates several questions and is still a mystery like the others.

    6. Lake Baikal Mystery
Lake Baikal is very famous for being the oldest, largest and deepest fresh water lake on the surface of the earth. It is located in Southern Siberia. It is also unique because it has occupied many species of fish which are not found anywhere else on earth. The sediments which have been deposited on its bottom are approximately 7km deep. In April 2009, a thin ice circular area was seen at its southern end with a division of the lake with a submarine ridge.

    7. Baltic Sea Anomaly
A disk shaped large object was discovered in the Baltic Sea and was investigated in 2012. It was not clear about that object that whether it was defense tool or a rock lying under water or a UFO. It was proved by Swedish explorers that it was a rock. But the things that raised the questions were that there was no silt layer of the rock and it is 60m wide and also has an 8m high pillar and is covered with boxes and construction lines.

    8. Structure in Lake Macdonald, Ontario
In 2005, a strange stone structure was discovered at the depth of 40 feet in Lake Macdonald. This curious stone structure consisted of an elongated rock which has a mass of approximately 453 kg and it is completely resting on the 7 stones which are about the size of a baseball. These stones are lying on an extremely large slab which is of a thousand pound size. This structure was considered natural until the discovery of three shims by an archaeologist.

    9. Google Earth Circular Anomalies
On a global scale, some circular anomalies were seen in North Carolina, Belize and Florida by archaeologists. No one till now knows about their objective. It is believed that these circular anomalies are the ancient burial mound. These circular anomalies have the similarities with the stone structures found in Saudi Arabia but the underwater structures are more preserved. These circular anomalies can be dated back to ±8,000 BC.

    10. Mound in the Sea of Galilee
A huge circular stone structure was discovered in the Sea of Galilee in 2003. This anomalous structure is cone shaped and is made up of basalt rocks. It is present 9m beneath the sea. It also has some resemblance to ceremonial structure or ancient burial sites. It is also twice the size of Stonehenge in UK.

Top 10 most Healthy Breakfast alternatives

  • Top 10 most Healthy Breakfast alternatives
Top 10 most Healthy Breakfast alternatives

    1. INSTEAD OF SKIPPING BREAKFAST

Never skip breakfast- it really is the most important meal of the day. You can also whip up a quick meal of steamed veggies on top of toast or a waffle and be out the door in less than 5 minutes. If even that takes too long to make, just grab a fruit like a banana with peanut butter, grapefruit, or strawberrie.

    2. INSTEAD OF BACON
Bacon is fattening, greasy, and terrible for your arteries. Stop by the vegetarian protein section in the grocery store and try soy bacon, soy sausage, veggie burgers, and other sources of protein. Surprisingly, some of these even taste like the real thing!

    3. INSTEAD OF COFFEE
Coffee is habit-forming and addictive since it contains caffeine. Instead, you can sip on green tea which is heart-smart and has the added benefit of increasing weight loss.

    4. INSTEAD OF STORE-BOUGHT GRANOLA
Yes, granola is healthy. But the store-bought box you're eating contains more fat and sugar than you need. Granola is simple to make at home- Mix rolled oats with dried fruit and brown sugar, toast it in the oven for 5 minutes and you've got yourself delicious homemade granola.

    5. INSTEAD OF BUTTER
Do we have to explain this one? Butter is good in small quantities, but its fatty content really adds up when you use it regularly. Try different plant-based spreads such as Benecol or Smart Balance instead.

    6. INSTEAD OF BREAKFAST BARS
Don't fall for the trap of buying breakfast bars just cause they're branded as healthy. These are processed and contain diet no-no's such as high fructose corn syrup. You can make better bars at home using granola, dried fruits, nuts, and oats.

    7. INSTEAD OF FLAVORED YOGURT CUPS
Yogurt is healthy; store-bought flavored yogurt cups are not, containing more than 10 grams of sugar. Make your own yogurt using plain yogurt and fresh fruit or nuts. Greek yogurt is an even healthier alternative.

    8. INSTEAD OF CINNAMON BUNS
These are hard to give up because cinnamon buns smell irresistible. However, you may find it easier to walk away from once you know that just one fast-food bun can contain as much as 900 calories. You can instead get that cinnamon flavor from baked goods you make yourself- cinnamon swirl bread, breakfast bars, etc.

    9. INSTEAD OF A FROSTED DOUGHNUT
Deep fried and dripping with glaze, frosted doughnuts are not a nutritious option. You can instead make your own whole-wheat doughnut with fresh fruit. Our favorite is a banana bread doughnut with chocolate chips- yum!

    10. INSTEAD OF A TOASTER PASTRY
Toaster pastries, while admittedly delicious, contain too many processed ingredients and additives to be healthy. A healthier alternative is an English muffin with sweet toppings such as banana, chocolate chips, and peanut butter.

Fusion of Plant and Animal ( Green Sea Slug)

  • Fusion of Plant and Animal ( Green Sea Slug)

Green sea slug shows have green color because it is the first animal to that has stolen enough genes to become the first animal shown to make chlorophyll like a plant.
The Green Sea Slug is Shaped like a leaf itself, The slug "Elysia chlorotica" already has a reputation for having the photosynthesizing organelles and some genes like algae.
The slug has acquired enough stolen goods to make an entire plant chemical-making pathway work inside an animal body, says Sidney K. Pierce of the University of South Florida in Tampa.

The slugs can manufacture the most common form of chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants that captures energy from sunlight, Pierce reported January 7 at the annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. Pierce used a radioactive tracer to show that the slugs were making the pigment, called chlorophyll a, themselves and not simply relying on chlorophyll reserves stolen from the algae the slugs dine on.
“This could be a fusion of a plant and an animal — that’s just cool,” said invertebrate zoologist John Zardus of The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.

Microbes swap genes readily, but Zardus said he couldn’t think of another natural example of genes flowing between multicellular kingdoms.
Pierce emphasized that this green slug goes far beyond animals such as corals that host live-in microbes that share the bounties of their photosynthesis. Most of those hosts tuck in the partner cells whole in crevices or pockets among host cells. Pierce’s slug, however, takes just parts of cells, the little green photosynthetic organelles called chloroplasts, from the algae it eats. The slug’s highly branched gut network engulfs these stolen bits and holds them inside slug cells.
Some related slugs also engulf chloroplasts but E. chlorotica alone preserves the organelles in working order for a whole slug lifetime of nearly a year. The slug readily sucks the innards out of algal filaments whenever they’re available, but in good light, multiple meals aren’t essential. Scientists have shown that once a young slug has slurped its first chloroplast meal from one of its few favored species of Vaucheria algae, the slug does not have to eat again for the rest of its life. All it has to do is sunbathe.
But the chloroplasts need a continuous supply of chlorophyll and other compounds that get used up during photosynthesis. Back in their native algal cells, chloroplasts depended on algal cell nuclei for the fresh supplies. To function so long in exile, “chloroplasts might have taken a go-cup with them when they left the algae,” Pierce said.
There have been previous hints, however, that the chloroplasts in the slug don’t run on stored-up supplies alone. Starting in 2007, Pierce and his colleagues, as well as another team, found several photosynthesis-related genes in the slugs apparently lifted directly from the algae. Even unhatched sea slugs, which have never encountered algae, carry “algal” photosynthetic genes.
At the meeting, Pierce described finding more borrowed algal genes in the slug genome for enzymes in a chlorophyll-synthesizing pathway. Assembling the whole compound requires some 16 enzymes and the cooperation of multiple cell components. To see whether the slug could actually make new chlorophyll a to resupply the chloroplasts, Pierce and his colleagues turned to slugs that hadn’t fed for at least five months and had stopped releasing any digestive waste. The slugs still contained chloroplasts stripped from the algae, but any other part of the hairy algal mats should have been long digested, he said.
After giving the slugs an amino acid labeled with radioactive carbon, Pierce and his colleagues identified a radioactive product as chlorophyll a. The radioactively tagged compound appeared after a session of slug sunbathing but not after letting slugs sit in the dark. A paper with details of the work is scheduled to appear in the journal Symbiosis.
Zardus, who says that he tries to maintain healthy skepticism as a matter of principle, would like to hear more about how the team controlled for algal contamination. The possibilities for the borrowed photosynthesis are intriguing though, he says. Mixing the genomes of algae and animals could certainly complicate tracing out evolutionary history. In the tree of life, he said, the green sea slug “raises the possibility of branch tips touching.”
“Bizarre,” said Gary Martin, a crustacean biologist at Occidental College in Los Angeles. “Steps in evolution can be more creative than I ever imagined.”

  • Top 10 hidden facts you didn’t know about Kareena Kapoor

Heroine’ is director Madhur Bhandarkar’s birthday gift to his leading lady Kareena Kapoor and whisking her off to London for a romantic weekend is her fiance Saif Ali Khan. tabloid! has no such extravagant gestures. But as Kapoor turns 32 this Friday, we run you through the many things that you may have forgotten about the birthday girl.

    1. Her name was derived from the book Anna Karenina, which her mother read while she was pregnant with her. But her family and close friends call her Bebo.

    2. She is Bollywood royalty and is the granddaughter of veteran actor Raj Kapoor and great-granddaughter of the legendary showman Prithviraj Kapoor.

    3. Her actor father Randhir Kapoor wasn’t too keen on his daughter joining films. But her mum Babita, a former actress, thought differently. Her parents separated and her mother raised Kareena and her elder sister Karishma single-handedly.

    4. Kapoor joined Mumbai’s Mithibai College to pursue a degree in commerce. She discontinued this course and switched to law. In between, she also enrolled into Harvard University for a three-month summer course in microcomputers.

    5. Kapoor was slated to make her debut with Hrithik Roshan in the blockbuster Kaho Na Pyaar Hai (2000). But she opted out when performance-oriented Refugee, opposite the then-newcomer Abhishek Bachchan, came along. Her loss proved to be Ameesha Patel’s gain. Roshan Jr and Patel became overnight stars but Refugee didn’t too well at the box-office.

    6. Her first commercial success was the sleeper hit Mujhe Kuch Kehna in 2001 opposite Tusshar Kapoor. She stole the thunder from Jeetendra’s son.

    7. She played the popular college snob Poo in Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham and was billed as Bollywood’s answer to Alicia Silverstone in Clueless. We are not crazy about it, but K3G remains one of the biggest blockbusters in her career.

    8. Bend It Like Beckham director Gurindher Chaddha did the unthinkable. She offered Kapoor the chance to play second fiddle to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and courted her for a role as the leading lady’s younger sister. Naturally, A-lister Kapoor turned down the miniscule role. It eventually went to model Piya Rai Chowdhary.

    9. She’s not a gadget person and considers her smartphone a slick innovation she happens to own.

    10. She’s usually diplomatic, but say the name Priyanka Chopra and her catty side emerges. Her latest claim: “My Heroine is better than Fashion”. For all those in the dark, Fashion remains Chopra’s biggest hit and she also won the National Award for it. While Chopra hit back saying “sour grapes”, Kapoor made snide remarks about PC’s posh accent.
